“It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. By his faith Noah condemned the rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith.”
Hebrews 11:7 (NLT)
II Peter 2:1-11
When I (Ardo) visited Manado last year for a mission trip, it was one of the most memorable trips that I’ve had in a long time. The food was great (dabu-dabu rocks!), the people were friendly (Indonesia, what else is new? Hehe) and the greatest attraction of Manado is, of course, Bunaken! After a few days of making new buildings for the Bible school and two churches as well as a helping out in a kids camp, snorkeling in Bunaken was what we needed. The reefs were beautiful and the fish were exotic and colorful but one thing that caught me by surprise was the ocean current. One minute we were swimming a few meters off the boat but once we got back up, we were tens of meters away from the boat! The ocean current was so strong and steady that if we didn’t realize quick enough, we’d be far away from the boat and get carried away into the ocean.
Life is a lot like swimming in Bunaken. This world will carry you in places that you never intend on going. The currents of this life will get you away from the safety of your boat and soon you might find yourself that it’s too late. But this is why Noah was awesome because even though the world says to ignore God’s laws, to live only for yourself, to take God’s ways lightly – he didn’t care but instead swam straight toward God and into the boat of righteousness. Today, where are you swimming to and do you have a boat of safety? Noah did and he obeyed till the end even though the world was carrying him elsewhere.
“God, I pray that we will be able to face the currents of life that invites us to go away from You and instead swim towards You and Your righteousness.”
